Why do we like drama and violence? Where did the sense of craving originate? Simply because violence and drama have been altered in to more of an entertainment? Humans have a sense and nature of aggressive and through observation there natural acts in a way can be fulfilled without physical retaliation. Media has been a huge impact on this aspect, because they have altered drama and violence for entertainment purposes. For instance, we laugh at shows that present people getting mentally and physically abused or hurt. For example, shows like jackass, ridiculous, tosh.o and america’s funniest home videos. These shows provide entertainment by laughing at people’s pain. This sense of craving has been established more the decades ago. Many years ago Indians tribes have even done rituals of human’s sacrifices and other disturbing things. Just like in Lottery how they had a tradition of stoning random people and everyone would watch. Why do we like these type of shows; we attracted to these shows because of media providing stimuli’s. This stimulus is presented to humans by graphics and actions that keep us alert and “on the edge”. This once again brings up the subject of plentitude; we want to be entertained even more with better violence and drama. Sometimes I feel this sense of craving gets to and extreme point that is absurd. For example, the Saw movies are disgustingly disturbing that someone was this twisted to thinking of the movies plots. The hunger games portray a future idea of the extent that craving violence and drama could get to. What has to world become to and what will happen because of the continuous craving?
Jackass
I feel like it comes down to what we let ourselves watch. I know for instants my mom get pissed off when parents of 5 year old's let them watch t.v. show like The Simpsons. I feel like we have let go on the ideas of what we are letting ourselves watch and it builds up over time. Take a look at the classic movies of our child hold, Snow White and the seven dwarfs, there you have some evil queen trying to kill snow white and even hires a hit man for the job. It is a beloved children movie and story but it is filled with violence.
ReplyDeleteWe are currently on a downward trend of character among people. Through our evolution, we've consistently "outsmarted" ourselves out of becoming simply just better people. This continuous craving is just going to get worse and worse unless we as a people, one person at a time, refuse to let it continue. It follows the same point that we've been taught in this class; that change starts with yourself.
ReplyDeleteI think that our society just gets bored to quickly and can turn a blind eye to violence. This leads to your idea of plentitude in that we are looking for more drama and violence to entertain us. I believe that it is not entirely ok to completely surround ourselves with drama and violence because that has the potential to make that be the norm. That then would be the downfall of our society.
ReplyDeleteAre we attracted to the violence on reality shows, as opposed to real life violence? If so, is this OK/ normal? If no, why is this OK? Is it because we can remove ourselves from it?
ReplyDeleteI believe that we take great entertainment in violence and drama we we are not directly associated with it. This is because if you have drama with a good friend or a girlfriend it is not fun at all and it gets people very angry. However if we are watching a show such as Jersey Shore we look towards drama because it entertains us when not related to yourself. Same goes for violence and pain. If the violence and pain is not happening to you like in the show jackass it is hilarious. But if you look at the participants in these stunts they don't look like they are enjoying injuring themselves.
